Cubie Technolgy Tip: Instant messages (IM) are a lot of fun and a great way to use technology. It is an easy way for friends and colleagues to keep in touch. It is also a good way to get a quick answer to something without making a phone call or walking over to the next desk to ask them personally.
On the other hand, IMs interrupt the normal flow of thought, are generally disruptive, and can be considered a way for people to take time from you, when you are working hard to meet a deadline. In today’s fast paced environment, it is common to see someone with multiple IMs, while answering emails, and on a conference call at the same time. There is no way any of the people have the person’s attention.
Be respectful of the other person’s time and always ask if it is a good time to talk or if they prefer to get back to you later. You have still interrupted your listener, but at least they know you care about their time and they will be more open to giving you the time you need.
